An Academic Acceleration Option

Current educational data indicate that over half of public school students are performing below their grade level in reading. Furthermore, new investigative research has shed light on the fact that the predominant curriculum and strategies used for decades to teach students to read involve teaching readers to use strategies that work against the development of strong reading skills. Millions of students have struggled to learn to read as a result. The impact of decades of ineffective reading instruction is evident in the national educational achievement data, with only 35% of 4th graders achieving proficiency in reading.

The Fit Lite

Solution

The Fit Lite® Literacy program is a research-based, empirically validated solution for addressing the literacy crisis we are facing as a nation. Fit Lite® literacy intervention is a truncated version of the Fit Learning Model®, designed for classroom intervention. This model utilizes empirically supported teaching strategies such as direct instruction, fluency-based instruction, curriculum-based measurement, and precision teaching to support mastery of basic literacy skills. Fit Lite Literacy™ can be easily integrated into the classroom and into a Tier-2 multi-tiered system of support

Key

Accomplishments

The Fit Lite® model was first pioneered in a rural school where only 20% of the 3rd-grade students were proficient in reading. Participants received an average of 400 minutes of Fit Lite® instruction across approximately 12 weeks. The results demonstrated significant academic gains in reading proficiency, with all participants achieving meaningful improvements in their reading skills (Sawyer, et al 2020). In a second study,
The Fit Lite® model was implemented in a Title 1 school in Northern Nevada. In just 10 hours of instruction, the lowest readers in the classroom gained an average increase of 31 words per minute on reading assessments (Newsome et al, In Press).

Goals And

Dreams

We believe that literacy is a basic human right, and our vision is to ensure that educators have the tools they need
to teach reading. To achieve this, the Fit Learning® founders have developed a research-based curriculum that
focuses on critical literacy skills, and we're committed to making it widely available. With the potential to turn
around the concerning trend of low literacy achievement in the United States, Fit Lite® is an important step toward
a more literate and equitable society.
